Learn Brazilian Music in Brazil

Come visit Brazil and have an immersive experience in Brazilian Music from top rated instructors.

Overview

The Brazilian Music Workshop is presented in Brasília, Brazil’s capital, where you can learn Brazilian Music with a jazz approach from top rated instructors in a friendly environment. Through musical activities like masterclasses, concerts, percussion jams and combos, you will deepen your knowledge in genres like Samba, Bossa Nova, Partido Alto and many others.

Masterclasses

Each day we will offer masterclasses covering different Brazilian genre. Master Brazilian musicians will perform and demonstrate the main aspects of each genre with the goal of you applying them later during the combo session.

Percussion Classes

Playing percussion instruments is the best way to learn how the rhythms within Brazilian music work together. This is probably the most fun part of the workshop and the instructors will introduce you to several instruments and rhythms in a step-by-step process. This invaluable experience will be essential to your performance in your own instrument.

We are adding Combos!

This year we are adding combo sessions! Here you will be able to play in a smaller setting guided by experienced educators there to help guide you. Don’t worry about the music! We will provide you with a list of tunes (written charts and audio) where you can practice in advance and play more confidently.

Concerts and Jam Sessions with great Brazilian Musicians

Cultural events, city tour, samba party, gastronomy and more

Special group activities and activities specifically designed for non-musicians

The Brazilian Music Workshop

THE IDEA
The idea of the Brazilian Music Workshop is to provide valuable knowledge about Brazilian music without overwhelming you with theory, chords, and scales. The focus will be on the musical involvement, where you can experience, learn and play the various rhythmical styles so identified with Brazilian music, such as:  Bossa Nova, Samba, Baião, Partido-Alto, Frevo, Afoxé, Maracatu and more. You will also be learning the beautiful melodies and interesting harmonies we all so enjoy. This experience is designed to be according to your musical level.

MATERIAL
Material will be selected that will best demonstrate the styles you will be experiencing firsthand. There will be some you might know but many you will be hearing for the first time.  We will be providing you with written music and recorded examples of all the tunes we plan to cover.  That way you can be prepared and have a good idea of just what you will be working on.

EXPERIENCE
We also want to provide you with experiencing all things Brazil – the people, the culture, food and drink, sites, and the spirit that makes this county so vibrant. Planned are several cultural and touristic activities in addition to your having free time to enjoy the city.

We know that you might bring your spouse, who might not be musically trained.  We thought of them too!

MORNING ACTIVITIES
During the morning, activities are directed to all, musicians and non-musicians alike. Your day will begin with percussion practice, where everyone gets to experience playing in a Samba School-like setting guided all the while by gifted artists/educators. You don’t have to be a musician to appreciate and participate. You just need to try and ‘groove’ with the beat.  It will be a lot of fun!

Music demonstrations by master Brazilian artists/educators, will follow the percussion class. These mini-concerts will demonstrate how these various rhythms and styles are performed, how they are played. What better way to learn that to have all explained in real time!

AFTERNOON ACTIVITIES
During the afternoon session, we will split the musicians into combos for hands-on musical practice with gifted Brazilian music
educators. There will be special activities for the non-musicians – like visiting museums, a special Portuguese class, shopping, and more.

We don’t stop here. We will also go to bars and restaurants to attend to live concerts, have special jams, a trip to an astonishing waterfall and more.

A truly monumental city

WELCOME TO BRASÍLIA

THE CITY

The Brazilian Music Workshop will be held in Brasília - the capital of Brazil, a singular city in the central part of the country. It is a world-class city, energetic and vibrant. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer and Lúcio Costa, it was established in 1960 and it is a futuristic city like no other in the world, an UNESCO Heritage City.

THE HOTEL

Also designed by Oscar Niemeyer, the Brasília Palace Hotel continues his mid-century modern theme which is Brasília. Set on an expansive lawn with a lake view, Niemeyer incorporated two large, interesting works by Athos Bulcão and surrounds you with furniture of the period, even a heated pool. All make for an open, inviting stay and the inclusive breakfast is fantastic. A great way to start your day.

Partners

Many thanks to our partners. Without them, the Brazilian Music Workshop would not be possible.
